| "Better to reign in Hell, then serve in heaven."
John Milton, "Paradise Lost"
| Most of these schools can fall under the general category of Skepticism. The schools that do are: Agnosticism, Cynicism, Nihilism, Relativism, and Pessimism. Also, the philosophical schools of Stoicism and Empiricism have ties to differing degrees with Skepticism. Also, Buddhism has ideas that are found within Skepticism. | | |
| For those of you not familiar with the philosophical definitions in my interests list, I'll offer here a short definition of each.
Agnosticism: Agnosticism is the philosophical view that the (truth) values of certain claims—particularly theological claims regarding the existence of God, gods, or deities—are unknown, inherently unknowable, or incoherent, and therefore, (some agnostics may go as far as to say) irrelevant to life.
Skepticism (philosophical): Philosophical skepticism (UK spelling, scepticism) is the philosophical school of thought that critically examines whether knowledge and perceptions are true and whether one can ever have true knowledge.
Nihilism: Nihilism is a philosophical position which argues that the world, and especially human existence, is without objective meaning, purpose, comprehensible truth, or essential value.
Cynicism: Presently the word generally describes the opinions of individuals who maintain that only self-interest motivates human behavior, and who are disinclined to rely on sincerity, human virtue, or altruism. A modern cynic typically has a highly contemptuous attitude towards social norms, especially those which serve more of a ritualistic purpose than a practical one, and will tend to dismiss a substantial proportion of popular beliefs, conventional morality and accepted wisdom as irrelevant or obsolete nonsense.
Fatalism: Fatalism is the view that human deliberation and actions are pointless and ineffectual in determining events, because whatever will be will be.
Individualism: Individualism is a moral, political, and social philosophy, which emphasizes individual liberty, the primary importance of the individual, and the "virtues of self-reliance" and "personal independence". Individualism opposes the exercise of authority over the will of the individual, especially when exercised by the political state or "society"
Pessimism: Philosophical pessimism describes a tendency to believe that the life has a negative value, or that this world is as bad as it could possibly be.
Physicalism (philosophical materialism): Physicalism is the metaphysical position that everything is physical; that is, that there are no kinds of things other than physical things.
Rationalism: In philosophy and in its broadest sense, rationalism is "any view appealing to reason as a source of knowledge or justification". In more technical terms it is a method or a theory "in which the criterion of truth is not sensory but intellectual and deductive"
Relativism: Relativism expresses the view that the meaning and value of human beliefs and behaviors have no absolute reference.
Take these views, combine them, and there you have my outlook.
| A little clarification on some things I said yesterday. I'm not a Darwinist. Nor do I believe Might is right. I believe wholeheartedly in fate. Also, I don't believe Eastern religions are that bad. I think Taoism, and to some extent, Buddhism, are good traditions. But I still think the western idea of God and religion is just foolishness. I also think that western mysticism is a joke. Western philosophy is pointless, with the possible exceptions of fatalism and nihilism. In all, I think the western idea of anything is bullshit. Religion, philosophy, government, society, it's all crap. Maybe one day, I'll discover the Eastern idea of these things is too, which I probably will, then I can say without doubt that everything is pointless. Only Fate, and possibly Chaos, have any real meaing in this fucked up world. | | |
| It's been awhile, and everyone wonders where I am, and everyone wants me to make a post. Sure, I'll make a post, a real doosey. FUCK GOD! That felt good, let me scream it again; FUCK GOD! I've come to a conclusion. Either God is real, and He just likes to fuck with people and destroy their lives, in which case, the whole "God is love" schtick is bullshit. Or Satan is in control, in which, he does the same thing, but yet he's supposed to make people feel good physically. So he's an asshole too. Or, there's a third choice, Fate is supreme, everything that happens, happens whether we want it to or not, because it's all been determined before hand. If we are to base our outlook on life based primarily on experience, which was a major point for the ancient, and modern, philosophers, then I take choice number three. God and Satan do not exist, or are just bumbling bitches, and Fate is all there is. With that being said, let me go on...Life has shown me something; if this is a test, then we're all doomed to fail before we begin. All religious, philosophical, and mystical ideas are all bullshit. Intelligence is a farce, because no matter what we know, if we're not given the opportunity to use it, it does us no good. "You might be Epicurean if"...Call me a nihilist, a defeatist, atheist, whatever. But all I can go on is what I've experienced, because we are the only things that are real. Good and evil are concepts that hold no real meaning. They are all based on one man's opinion of ethics. And good to me is to destroy whatever sets out to destroy you. If something stands in your way, annihilate it. No matter what it is, so-called friends, family, religion, society, government...God. I'll dedicate the rest of my days to destroying people's faith in that sadist. Brainwashed fucking fools. I'll destroy Him, or die trying. I'll destroy all His people. I'll destroy their ideology. And their "God" can't do much about it. The only power He has is the power we give Him, and I refuse to give that cock-sucking son of a bitch any more power. We'll see who has the last laugh. Fate has already decread that such a foolish idea as God is doomed to failure. Look what it does to people. War, hatred, judmentalism, racism, sexism, elitism. All things, that, at one point or another, we're taught are against good judgement and good morals. However, these are the very things that such a deity wishes to make obvious in His followers. So He automatically fails. Both by proxy, of His followers, and by nature, that He's a jackass. "Thus spoke Nietzsche..." God is dead. Suicide can sometimes be such a grand thing, can't it? Peole finally realize what a bastard He really is. Of course, let's not forget Eastern religions, either. They are all based off of pretty much the same morality, which is a crock of shit. Look at the Eightfold Path of Buddha. Read Confucius' Analects. Read Mencius. Eastern philosophy and religion, and western philosophy and religion; differenct concepts of the nature of the divine, same goody-two-shoes bull shit ethics. "And the Darwinist of the Year award goes to..." If I have learned anything from Darwin, it's survival of the fittest. Might makes right, and only the mighty survive. I could care less about whether evolution is a scientific fact or not, I don't give one rat's ass about where we came from or how we got here. As far as I care, the Gnostic idea of the Demiurge is right, that we were created by God, but that God is really a demon in disguise, and an arrogant asshole at that. But they still believe in a loving God revealed by Jesus, so ultimately, their system is just a bunch of nonsense. Everytime something goes right in my life (which is very, very seldom), I'm told I have to give God praise. But why? Didn't I do this myself, with my own mind and power? But when something goes horribly wrong (which it often does), I'm either told, "oh, God is testing your faith", or, "just trust in God", but never, "well, God can sometimes be a little bitch, and He was really pissed off at George "monkey fucking" Bush, so He's taking it out by sending huge fucking hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes, etc., and since we're only human, and His creation, we have to sit here and take it like bitches when He throws a two year old's fucking temper-tamptrum." Fuck that. God can kiss my white, atheist, nihilist, Darwin loving ass. And while He's down there, I got something He can suck on to. So, have I rambled long enough? I don't feel like I have, but maybe I'll add more later. I'll probably still be just as pissed off. | | |
